German: in Island

I think you use "in" in both languages when it refers to a country or political region, and "on" when it's used as a geographic term.

I'm sure that if you're talking about the rock formations, for example, you would say (in German): "Die Gesteinsformationen auf Island...."

It would sound strange to say you were "on Puerto Rico" or "on Crete". "On" only makes sense if you are referring to a generic location such as "on an island".

Wenn man das Inseldasein und nicht den Staat betonen will, sagt man auf Englisch "on the island of Iceland/Cyprus etc.". Auf auf Deutsch ist das nicht so eindeutig. "auf Island" klingt ungewohnt, "auf Zypern" hingegen ganz geläufig.

"On" ist im Englischen (neben "in") dann gebräuchlich, wenn die Insel kein eigener Staat ist, z.B. "on Crete". Im Deutschen ist in diesen Fällen aber NUR "auf" möglich (auf Kreta etc.). Dasselbe gilt für Inselgruppen ("in/on the Bahamas" - "auf den Bahamas")
