    widely expanded characteristic?

A widely expanded characeristic of this time was ...

    Does this phrase exist?

Personally, I believe what she ( a non-native speaker) means is a "widespread characteristic", but on the other hand, she is quite in control of the language. Maybe, the phrase is used in America?

Thank you very much for your help.

what's the context? Personally, I think "widespread" is probably more apt, too.

No. Sound dumb, like someone trying to reach too high rhetorically and not making it.

    Try
    "Widely diffused/dispersed"

    "Widespread" is good.

Looks to me like an overliteral translation of 'weitverbreitet' (or is that 'weit verbreitet'?).

'Widespread' would at least be grammatical, but I wonder if 'common' or 'typical' might not be even better?

    "Widely expanded" is very odd.

I would expect: a typical characteristic (or, perhaps, prominent feature) of the/this period
