    on an island vs.in an island

    When do you say "in an island" and when "on an island"?

    I've come across an article in which it says "on Bermuda", "on Curacao" etc. but "on Curacao in the Dutch Antilles".

    I always thought it was "in", never "on".

    Any help is well appreciated.

    You're always on an island, never in it, unless that island is a country or state: I'm in Hawaii right now, but I'm on Oahu. (I wish)

    "In the Dutch Antilles" bezieht sich auf eine Inselgruppe, daher "in". Wenn man sagen möchte, dass man auf eine Insel fährt oder dort lebt, heißt es "on" (Sylt, Oahu, Malta...).

    So habe ich es gelernt :o)

    Auf UK-sites habe ich

    ca. 3.5oo Treffer für "I'm in Ibiza"

    aber keinen Treffer für "I'm on Ibiza"

    gefunden.

    Simple, I just don't know when to use which.

    I would imagine when people say they’re “in” Ibiza they mean the town Ibiza (which just happens to be on the island of Ibiza).

    die ganzen englaender die ich kennen machen urlaub "in gran canaria". aber sind halt auch englaender. weiss nicht ob das stimmt.

    Hansdampf, ich habe nie gesagt, dass Google die Lösung ist, ich habe es schlicht nicht verstanden, deshalb auch die Anfrage in diesem Forum.
