Is "hello together" a valid salutation in English?

    Comment
It seems a lot of germans just translate 'Hallo zusammen' by 'hello together'.

I wonder whether 'hello together' is a valid English salutation?

Not where I am from. Hello everyone would work for an informal situation though.

"Hello together" is definitely a Germanism. They presumably mean "Howdy, y'all!"

"Hello/Hi, folks" could be a valid version as well.

Me, what is "complete rubbish"? "Hello together"?

Hallo zusammen is perfect in German but is translated better into English as Hello everyone or Hi everybody rather than Hello together.

"Hello All" is also being used more frequently (informal)
Personally, I still prefer "Hello Everyone" (informal)

Hello together ist komplett falsch und wird m Englischen auf diese Weise nicht verwendet.

Use "Good evening all" and you'll have the older members of the audience in stitches ;-)

I just checked (because I thought that too), and in the vid I watched, he touched his hand to his helmet and clearly said "Good evening, all" ;-)

You and me both stumped, then. I’d have put a bet on it.

Apparently, the PC-bollix brigade has now banned coppers to use this form of greeting since it could be against the person’s national or cultural understanding of that time of day

I'd say (and write in e-mails to a group; "Hi (or hello) everyone"

##15,19 Yes, I've also found this now (though I tend not to look at the Telegraph -- I find it too annoying to be cut off because of their paywall). From what I saw online in the Mirror et al. it seems to have been the Warwickshire force, back in 2009. Ridiculous. Let's hope that was an isolated instance, and long since abandoned.

I was really looking up the catchphrase, and Wikipedia has this to say:

[Dixon] begins with a salute and the greeting "Good evening all",[6] which was changed to "Evening all" in the early 1970s, which has lived on in Britain as a jocular greeting.

I'm told that it helps to install a second browser with java script disabled, if you really feel the need to read the Telegraph.

Ta muchly, Hecuba, then laalaa and I were both right - sort of ;-)

"Evening all" has an especially funny effect when I use it, because noone expects the Spanish inquisition, and even less a German who knows Dixon ;-)

    Ah, that makes sense.

My (conscious) experience of Dixon would be early-ish 70s.

I had a colleague who was British and used "hello together" as a joke greeting at our German employer's offices. He also said "Mealtime!" between 11 am and 2 pm every day. Thanks for reminding me of him! :-))
