    TESO #64 The Kama Sutra

    Comment
Now that I've got your attention...

    64 is :
The number of sexual positions in the Kama Sutra (how many do you know?)

The maximum number of strokes in any Chinese character

The number of classical arts listed in many Indian scriptures. They include: singing, dancing, painting, poetry, playing cards, making arguments, making flower garlands, etc

The number of Braille characters in the old 6-dot system

The amount of crayons in the popular Crayola 64 pack

The subject of the Beatles song "When I'm Sixty-Four"

The code for international direct dial calls to New Zealand

The atomic number of gadolinium, a lanthanide

In chess or draughts, the total number of black (dark) and white (light) squares on the game board

A character in the Donald Duck comics universe.

Yes, we're still here, chatting, arguing and discussing anything and everything. We welcome all with a rudementary grasp of English, Deutschisch or gibberish. We're poetic, pathetic, idiotic, ironic, acerbic, acronymic, aesthetic, algophobic, altruistic, amoristic, analytic, angelic, anachronistic, animatistic, antagonistic, anthropomorphic, anxiolytic, apathetic, apologetic, atheistic, biologistic, bucolic, charismatic, cryptic, diaphoretic, diplomatic, dramatic, dogmatic, dyspeptic, egoistic, encyclopaedic, energetic, exoteric, fantastic, frantic and lots of other things. (cut short 'cause I've just realised just how many words there are that end in 'ic'. *ggggg*

Thanks for the new thread, mykl..

"tangled, bangled, spangled and spaghettied" if I remember correctly.. (Hair)
I-net doesn't run as fast as I would like it to due to a Virus scan running in the background..

Been out w't'dogs, sunny but windy.. Hubby's birthday tomorrow, so I'm gonna bake a cake and make (a) Tiramisu.. Which I am not allowed to eat *heul*
    No raw eggs for me..

Test for diabetes tomorrow, gotta stay one hr at the doc.. eat nothing, drink nothing..Gotta good book..

Oh, I bought DVDs from Loriot for hubby.. Ödipussi and Pappa ante Portas (and "Ein Mann sieht rot" with Charles Bronson- which I won't watch! Awful!)

Watched a really interesting film about wolverines in FIN yesterday.. beautiful country and it looks so much like AK.. Does even have the same animals.. After that, we watched Tamme Hanken do his chiropractical things on horses.. Amazing. A former colleague of mine had him work her horse once and says the results are quite astonishing..

    Hi, All!

Just a quickie - am off to turn in my application, but first have to purchase a "Bewerbungsmappe" - ran out of them, and companies now seem to KEEP the nice ones :-)) Cost-saving measure, most likely.

Sun's shining brightly, but freezing cold - NOT complaining...

Was sitting here printing out a CV update, when an e-mail came in requesting that I submit an offer for 106 pages - spoke with the person, hung up, only to have the phone ring - and "unknown" person had heard of me, and also wants an offer for about 10 pages....all tech mech, but at least basically on a subject I can understand (IT and robotics). Gotta get a move-on.

OH WARI, I flunked my diabetes test way back when - had so-called "Schwangerschaftsdiabetes" BUT only because I had "pigged-out" on chocolate the day before, and that morning :-))

Poor mykl, sending you a belated hug!

- poor = arme mykl :-(

I didn't get the 8-page translation - somehow his message ended up in my spam folder, and I was gone for most of the afternoon, saw it too late, gave him a call, but the publishing house had insisted that either he get a translator RIGHT NOW, or they would...very interesting article, and I would have had NO problem translating it...oh well, he said he'd keep me in mind.

Went to the Arbeitsamt to personally turn in my application for the part-time job - naturally, Murphy's Law struck again - they've changed their "we close early day" from Thursday to Wednesday...will try again tomorrow!!!

Beautiful weather and it did me a world of good to get down into the valley. On the way back from taking my granddaughter to her riding lesson, weather report came on forecasting more snow for the weekend. In unison, we both said: Bitte, kein Schnee mehr :-)) Pretty bad, when even a child can no longer stand the sight of snow :-)

Snow, but at least the sun's out :-) Waiting for the telekom guy to come and fix my phone - ever since I moved here, I've heard people mumbling away in the background...couldn't really hear what they were saying, but just that someone was on my line. For the past couple of days, I distinctly hear some (elderly) woman talking about such exciting things as "Hundekacke" :-))

edit on: The phone just rang once - same woman on the line, but not wanting to speak to me - heard her saying to someone else: Das hast du SCHON WIEDER gemacht...

    Morning all!
I lived in a (more or less legal)squat in St Albans for a few years and we thought the telephone there was haunted! Each time you picked it up, you could hear the last thing that was said in the previous conversation.
Now I’m not saying that our friends in blue aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed, but if they are going to tap someone’s phone they should at least do it properly (can you imagine the fun you can have when you know someone is listening in, if they hadn’t illegally tapped it they would have tried prosecuting us for wasting police time).
The sun is out here but snow is on the way :-(

mykl: Have a wonderful weekend and give my best greetings to daisy..

My best friend was here this morning, she's pregnant, too. Got 3 weeks head start (and 10 kg..I really feel THIN! Imagine that!!!).. So we talked about (surprise!) babies! Even the dogs got bored ;)

Carla is in fully in heat now, standing still and taking her tail away for every male to enter.. Quiet embarrassing in a way.. We separated them now, as I cannot watch over them every second.. Hope it's gonna last only a few days..

Now Wari, Wouldn't that be "fun" - a brand new baby, and 5-7 puppies in one go :-)) Glad to hear your best friend is also expecting :-)) Way to go!

Your "American citizen" remark triggered a memory, Wari. At the height of the RAF reign of terror, I had moved into my own apartment, which was almost unheard of back then here in German - "girls" moved from their parent's house, into that of their newly wed husband. My sister and I threw a Halloween party (also unheard of way back when), and our friends arrived: men dressed as women, 2 dressed as Arabs, a couple of clowns, one ghost. A week or two later, early Saturday morn, I awoke to someone pounding on my door. Stumbled out of bed, my hair in pigtails, wearing a Mickey Mouse nightgown, kitty-cat bedroom slippers - to ask: Wer ist da, bitte - AUFMACHEN!! POLIZEI!!! Opened door to see about 4 policemen armed to the teeth, machine guns and all - looking very silly when I asked: Ja, bitte?? Me: Sie können gerne reinkommen, bitteschön.

edit on: Er hatte sein 1.

Ach so, auch kein Schlaganfall...very scary!!

HI ALL! Scare's over - thank God!! They ran all kinds of eye tests, which basically ruled out anything wrong with my brain function (ha ha:-)). Eyes were completely in focus today - but, need glasses to drive with - a so-called "Fernbrille" - seeing double most likey triggered by dry, hot air in my office...they determined I'm far-sighted (1.0 diopter) and have "doppelte Hornhautverkrümung" - had to walk around for 15 minutes wearing "glasses" that looked rather like these, except my colors were red with thick black rims :-)) http://www.optik-leonhardt.de/uploads/Newspic...

Dragonflies do actually have more feet then reptiles. Some of the reptiles don't have legs and feet at all.. And we all started out the same in the primordial soup (new word learned: Ursuppe). But I do hope 70 is your year of birth, not the number of your legs...

Snow again? Why? Now even I have had enough of it. Listen, whoever-you-are-up-there-is-responsible: We've had enough for this spring. Drop down that stuff again on December 24th, earliest!!

It would be nice to get along without a car, but it's quite impossible here, at least if you've got children. We talked about the long ways to get anywhere here, didn't we? And the local "Busunternehmen" is going to reduce their number of (what is "Fahrten"?) from April, so there will be even less alternatives to get somewhere without a car... :-(

I'm lucky, my little town has everything I need within a 'reasonable' distance. To go shopping its about one and a half kilometers, to get into town about three and a half. There is a local 'corner shop', but I'd soon be broke if I had to do all my shoppping there. :). If I'm feeling lazy or the weather is really bad there's a bus every 20 minutes into town AND I can take my bike, 'cause it's all downhill to get home. :)

I found a nice joke yesterday. You might have known it already but it was new to me so I wanted to share it with you...

An elderly couple, Margaret and Bert, moved to Texas. Bert always wanted a pair of authentic cowboy boots, so, seeing some on sale, he bought them and wore them home.

Walking proudly, he sauntered into the kitchen and said to his wife, 'Notice anything different about me?'

    Margaret looked him over. 'Nope.'

Frustrated, Bert stormed off into the bathroom, undressed and walked back into the kitchen completely naked except for the boots. Again he asked Margaret, a little louder this time, 'Notice anything different NOW?'

Margaret looked up and exclaimed, 'Bert, what's different? It's hanging down today, it was hanging down yesterday, it'll be hanging down again tomorrow!'

Furious, Bert yelled, 'AND DO YOU KNOW WHY IT'S HANGING DOWN, MARGARET?'

    'Nope', she replied.

'IT'S HANGING DOWN, BECAUSE IT'S LOOKING AT MY NEW BOOTS!!!!'

Without changing her expression, Margaret replied, 'Shoulda bought a hat, Bert. Shoulda bought a hat.'

    ;-)

    See you later...

My PC caught a virus and was at the Doc..I came here via hubby's PC (good we have two). But that one has some problems connecting to the Internet when other people around us are busy online, too. It's a LAN-network I installed.
Now, my PC is back from the Doc, faster than ever, with a new Antivirus program and most data saved (apart from those I was working with when I caught the virus and shut down by disconnecting it from the power supplies immediately..)

Had some snowflakes this morning when walking w't'dogs, but it's to warm for it/them to stay. At least, there'll be spring officially by the end of the week.

BUT hopefully I'll change offices on May 1st - got a very interesting offer to develop a "Kompetenzzentrum Sprachen / Sprachschule" for a private education institute in Stralsund. They offer 150% of my current salary and holiday entitlement - now I only need to make up a concept of how to go about building up a language school till thursday - all and any ideas are welcome. :)

Snow's back...and Mr. Ferrari cancelled his lessons for this week, too - last week sick, this week backlog of work - there goes another 120 euros down the drain. My granddaughter wasn't too thrilled about all the new snow arriving on her birthday, either :-)

    the dirty details:

The place is a private institution whose mainstay was to provide "überbetriebliche Berufsausbildung", mainly in Tourism, which was paid for by the Arbeitsamt. Now the funds from Arbeitsamt have all but dried up, so they are looking for new lines of business. They also had "Weiterbildungsangebote" for a long time, but hardly any languages at all. They have the buildings, one English and one French teacher - but no real concept (not sure about technologies like a language lab, but I don't think so).

What they want is to build themselves up as a language school for a) companies who want their employess to be trained and b) for individuals who want to learn a new language / improve their language skills. English is of course a must, I see additional potential here for Swedish and Polish for the (tourism) industry and Spanish, French & Russian for individuals.

The prob I have is that they themselves don't quite know what they want, apart from something with languages to earn money with.

Obviously the nice thing about that is that you are quite free in what you develop, the downside is that there isn't a clear focus. Part and parcel of the job is going to do some teaching myself (no prob there) and doing acquisition of customers from the industry and doing the general sales & marketing - not just for the language school but for all of their services.

Now what I have to come up with is something like a rough timeline of what should be done till when and how I envisage the language school to look like in 6 months, a year and 2 years. I just don't have any experience with language schools, so I'm in a bit of a quandery here.

And yes Wari, I might be hiring teachers at some point in the future. :)

It's really all about where to end..
Apart from language courses for say, technicians, other business people, "normal" people just needing it for a vacation, providing certificates, teaching pupils or children in kindergarten-age..
You could offer "crash-courses", weekend seminars, weekly courses, language holidays.
I don't really know if Stralsund is central enough to get people from all over Meck-Pomm come and learn there..
Apart from English, French and Spanish, Russian and Polish would be good. Perhaps you can even find some "exotic" native speakers for Portuguese, Dutch, Danish or Swedish..
It all depends on the budget, doesn't it?

Oh, btw: What about "Deutsch für Ausländer"? It's a big topic in schools here.

And are you actually going to teach or perhaps provide help for teachers, too? It's a trend to teach English starting from class 3 at the moment, but most of the teachers in the Primary schools haven't learnded how to teach English..

Sorry 4Y, the cynic in me says this job is going nowhere, if the money has all but dried up with what are they going to pay you...........and for how long. Germany is full of small companies and businesses that go broke within weeks of the 'existenzgründer' money running out. :(

Wari, thanks - there is some food for thought there.
my personal list of language priorities here for the area would be:

    - English
    - Swedish (plenty of swedish tourists here, so should be interesting to companies and individuals alike)
    - Polish (close to border, Polish ppl coming here in ever increasing numbers for shopping / holidays)
    - Spanish (for holidaymakers)
    - all other languages
    - Deutsch für Ausländer needs some market studies - not that many Ausländer here in Meck-Pom ( Fernsehtipp :))

Thanks for your call, Carly. Most baby things are handed down to us by both sides of the family. I'll be going to buy a new mattress and a Wickelauflage (missing in LEO!!) and not much else for the first few month, hubby is going to build a baby-change-thingie and my Dad's gonna paint the room as soon as the new window is ready..

But I bought some lamps (we have some from there yet, so I won't need different bulbs), new blankets for hubby and me (they are ~10 years old and started to leave feathers all over the sleeping room. Perhaps all the snow is my fault..

Am going to shut down now, walk the dogs once more and start making dinner (something Australian with prawns, salmon and fresh vegetables in coconut cream.. yummy!)

    Moin allerseits.

Sorry for just dropping out yesterday, but it got a tad hectic here when a group of 20 arrived for a conference they had actually booked and contracted for NEXT MONTH! Why-oh-why do we send out contracts with the dates both in dd.mm.yyyy format and the month fully spelled out? I'm sure it's because we don't want anyone to read all that unnecessary information before signing. [/rant]

Anyways, Carly, they already did that senior citizen internet-course thingy once, and aparently it developed into a kind of "Stammtisch". Not sure if it is on offer now and if not why not.

Ikea is a very nice place to spend a rainy saturday afternoon if your idea of fun is to spend a sh*tload of money on things nobody, absolutely nobody needs or could conceivably ever need, on rather sub-standard quality furniture or on some staples such as china and cutlery in a rather - how can I say - uninspired design amongs hordes of women that can't decide between two equally beautifull pillows and swoon at the sight of matching curtains and lampshades, accompanied by their dazed and confused looking other halfs. (The funny thing about those women is that they are all so proud of their individually styled homes...)
Me, I'd rather sit outside on the curb at the parking lot exit, getting drenched with the water the cars leaving the flooded parking lot throw up.

Wari, though a man, I understand about the need for candles ,being somewhat a light-fetishist myself. I even understand the need for "stuff" -you always need some "stuff", even if it is stuff nobody really needs or could conceivably ever need.
I just don't understand the allure of IKEA. There are so many places out there for candles and stuff - lovely, handmade, individual stuff, where you can even talk with someone who knows their stuff and probably even knows which field the bees that produced the wax for the candles flew on.

IKEA is anything but cheap (which was their original business model), hordes of other ppl have exactly the same soulless stuff and candles, and you are forced to walk through the entire store, whether you want to or not once you get inside.

Last IKEA comment: You really have to know what you 1)want, 2) need and 3) what it would cost elsewhere.
As I find it actually really hard to buy lamps that cost less than 100 bucks each somewhere else (we really tried to avoid IKEA when we moved in here and went searching for lamps), I tend to go back there for them. Apart from Billy or Ivar, I'd never buy furniture there (being married to a carpenter ;), but they have some nice things for bed covers etc..

Dragonfly: your account says Lower Saxony, too.. But where do we have snow, still? None around Hannover or north of it.. We might want to search for you nearby to Carly, wouldn't we!?
