    golly-gosh, golly gosh

    Comment
Read this about the "phase" of the new UK government.

Then I thought, gosh darnit, we don't use "golly gosh" in the US, but we do use gosh a lot, to replace "god".

Chase: 'golly gosh' seems BE to me.

And, what is a 'golly-gosh phase'?

Is it a "honeymoon phase". A "care-free" phase? Does it indicate blissful ignorance?

dude, point taken. Yes, they use those phrases, but I think they say "Gosh golly", and not "Golly gosh". Heavens almighty, I don't remember. What's a golly? ;-)

EDIT: Just remembered Gomer Pyle, on what show? Where the character says "Goooolllly". Hmmm. Andy Griffith? Mayberry?

From your keyboard to my LAUGH! God, you just writing that makes me hear him saying that. I always felt Gomer was a little misunderstood. He always meant well, called things like he saw them, and somehow was nonetheless unappreciated. Poor Gomer. ;-)

Okay, just found in a dictionary, "golly" is also a euphemism for "God".
So, gosh-golly or golly-gosh are both redundant, sort of.
I did read that the new UK government is in a "golly-gosh phase",
and somehow that can't mean a: "God-God phase". Hmmm, maybe so.

No, it's not their God-God phase. I read it as the phase in which amazement is the order of the day and people are going around nattering about it incessantly.

Here's an illustrative quote from FT.com (here: http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/db0a01f8-6764-11df-...)

Britain’s new government is approaching the end of what one of David Cameron’s colleagues has called its “golly-gosh” phase.

For the past couple of weeks freshly-minted ministers have sounded as surprised as anyone else about how easily the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats have got the habit of collaboration. When the sun shines everything seems possible. [...]

    Gee whillikers!
