    Wenn ich mich recht erinnere

    Comment
A Leo poll. This has come up in a concurrent thread. There are various versions (in the English), but stick to these two.

Please just #1 or #2. And mark BE or AE. Pretty please.

    #1: If I remember rightly
    #2: If I remember right

    Voting commences now.

(OT: That's a valid point Nikolas. Maybe: "Wenn ich mich richtig daran errinere ..." Or has that fallen by the wayside?)

On-topic! Vote, text. What's correct in your opinion: right or rightly.

    Thanks thus far.

    Okay, before the thread dies:

    4 votes for "rightly"
    1 vote for "right" (me)

(Nikolas makes a good point, but wasn't technically a vote.)

So "rightly". I would not use that in AE.

    Appreciate!

    5 for rightly
    1 for right
(but yeah, #4 makes a great point, no?)

    #8. I'd say these:
    -- IIRC
    -- If I recall correctly
    -- If I remember correctly
-- If I remember right (IIRR)

I would not say "rightly". My tongue goes "yuck". AE

    almost #2 BE

I'd say "If I remember it right". "Rightly" perhaps if I wanted to be formal. "Correctly" is not something I'd say, though that is probably just me.

"Right" can also be used as an adverb - even the dictionaries agree :-)

    right
    adverb
    2. correctly: he had guessed right.
    • in the required or necessary way; satisfactorily: nothing's going right for me this season.

This is all in reference to a parallel thread:

    The choices are:
    #1: If I remember rightly
    #2: If I remember right

    See my #0.

The task is respond/vote, and state AE vs. BE.

(I fear this is getting lost between the pond, in the Bermuda Triangle.)

No, I think I was clear in the OP. I wanted to take a language poll:
    -- If I remember rightly (#1)
    -- If I remember right (#2)

I wanted people to state whether they are AE or BE while voting for #1, or #2.

(For the German: Wenn ich mich recht errinere ... which was in a parallel thread.)

I'm sorry though if I've caused confusion here. Not intended.

    b. right (ugs. AE)

... though see #4. And #10b; I don't think I would actually say this at all, I'd say 'correctly.'

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any occasion when I would ever feel the need to use 'rightly' at all.

OT (?), re #22: Off the top of my head, I can't think of any occasion when I would ever feel the need to use 'rightly' at all.

Does that mean you wouldn't use e.g. "quite rightly" either?

FWIW Google gets 436 hits on site:uk for "if I remember rightly", 433 for "if I remember right", and 438 for "if I remember correctly" (always clicking through to the last page of results, not the figure on the first page). Just 104 for "if I remember it right" and 49 for "if I remember it rightly" so I'm clearly in a minority in preferring it with the "it" :-)

@22 Und was wäre mit "and rightly so"? Oder ist das BE?
    #26AuthorBeel02 Aug 10, 18:42
    Comment
I wasn't saying anything about BE usage; it seemed already pretty clear that it's different on this point, which I assumed was the reason for the original question.

No, I wouldn't use 'quite rightly' either. In general, we don't use 'quite' as much in AE. At least, not in that emphatic sense; we use it in senses like 'not quite (as much).'

'Rightly so,' well, maybe, as more of a fixed and rather formal phrase.

    AE:
Between the two choices, I would pick #2.

However, I would generally say "If I remember correctly."

I am guessing that some self-styled (or even actual) grammarians might object to right, based on it's being an apparent adverb. I, however, would generally think that "right" relates to the thing remembered (is it right, the thing I remember?) - and not to the act of remembering (is the remembering function of my brain working correctly?). So I don't think of "right" as wrong here.

"Rightly" just sounds awkward and stilted.

    THANKS!

The tally, if I got it right was:

8 people for #1 (mostly BE) = rightly
7 people for #2 (mostly AE) = right

Thanks for the research CM2DD (google) and contributions and the cute comment!^^
I counted you as a vote for #2, according to what you wrote.

So, it seems divided down BE/AE lines. Just wanted to see. Appreciate again.
Interesting input also on the topic of what one would say. In the context,
    I'd also personally use "correctly".

(EDIT: I have a bad feeling I misused "mostly" above, but that's another topic.)

I was wondering what other examples there are in British or American English) of "rightly" used in this sense in final position? By "in this sense" I mean "in accordance with facts" rather than "in accordance with accepted behaviour" (e.g. "acted rightly").

Though I might say "if I remember rightly" (though I would prefer "correctly"), I don't think I would say "He guessed rightly."
