    Arnie gets his Stempel

    Comment
(Sorry in advance Leo, if this doesn't belong here. I just don't think it fits in QZ. Please don't delete unless it's necessary.)

I'm most interested in the culture and customs of Austria here! Arnold Schwarzenegger has a stamp coming out (or did it come out), in Austria. I remember a phase where Austrians weren't so approving of the Governator, and a stadium in Graz or somewhere was renamed.

So, 2010, right now, present day: What is the Austrian opinion on this? Does he get a stamp of approval? (P.S. I live in CA, thus my interest.)

I didn't know there was one already (stamp).

This is about the new one coming out (this year, if not already out).

@Tri Tri, Thanks. I'm wondering now if the press here is "breaking" the story of Arnie's stamp, because he'll be leaving office. Appreciate. You just opened my eyes. It could be a total PR stunt, and they're issuing more stamps since, as stated, he'll no longer be Governor in the fall. Appreciate again.

My Austrian friend hates him, says he can't even put a sentence together in German any more (I have no idea how true that is...)

It's true; I've heard him speak on German TV. The sad thing is, though, he doesn't sound any better in English, either. :-)

Those personalised stamps are good - you can get them in Germany too: https://www.plusbrief-individuell.de/plusbrie...

OT: opine, you always state that you are sorry in advance for s.th., and then you do it anyway. What's the point of apologizing, then?

(#10, It's just my nature to be upfront. Sometimes I don't know what category a topic belongs in.)

Would that I could buy me some stamps ... you can also get personalized stamps in the USA.

But Arnie ... @dude, would love to hear more. I've heard him both mostly in English, but a little in German. Is he a Governor without a language? (I wish he'd learn Spanish.) Sometimes I think he's so coached that it's just shtick, period.

Anyway, still very curious about opinions of Austrians on this topic. Thanks!

The contribution being Arnie or the film?

At least he's got a stamp. I've never minded the dialect.

I'm just wondering: proud son of Austria or not?

    Sorry if this is confusing.

As a self-promoter, his in a class of his own; as a strategist (marrying a Kennedy), he's excellent; as a bodybuilder, he's a cheat (he used steroids); as an actor, he sucks; as a governor, he's an utter failure. You figure it out.

Thanks dude. Value your opinion on this. I concur for the most part. So, no stamp of approval.^^

@dude: I dispute the cheating part. As far as I know, he never broke any rules (mainly because the use of anabolic steroids is permitted in many bodybuilding "events", sometimes explicitly and sometimes in the "nod and wink" type of way), and it's not as simple as shoving a needle in your ass and watching your muscles blow up. It's almost certain that anyone even competing in that contest has pretty complicated regimes of various drug programs and cycles, that really aren't that different from complicated workout or nutrition schedules (and it's also not a matter of simply eating a lot or even eating a lot of healthy food - google "cyclical ketogenic diet" for an example).

He was regarded as a figure of fun by many in Austria - about 20 years ago or so - due to his English accent when he spoke German and his German accent when he spoke English, his grinning like a Cheshire cat ... Some folks in and around his birthplace in Styria were proud of him when he was the "Terminator". Maybe they still are, but most people here nowadays neither like nor dislike him - he's simply of no importance for them.

@Lonelobo: while I agree with you that steroid use was perfectly legal in the sixties when S. started his "career," it is also a fact that without steroids, the body building industry would be doing as well as it is and body builders in general would be unable to accumulate such physical mass and size. In that sense (at least to my mind), all of them were cheats because they wouldn't have been able to be as cut as they were/are. Consequently, without his steroids, S. probably would not have had the career he's had: without steroids probably no Mr. Universe titles, without the titles no shot at "acting," without his acting millions probably no Kennedy, etc., etc. :-)

However, I disagree with your sentiment that "various drug programs and cycles" really aren't "that different from complicated workout or nutrition schedules." I think it's a big difference if I watch what I eat like a hawk or if I ingest a complicated concoction of drugs. Yes, both may be complicated to maintain, but I prefer healthy nutrition over synthetic drugs any day.
