    Was denn jetzt? Ein "Bauernfänger", der sich das Vertrauen fremder Leute erschleicht, um sie um ihre Wertsache zu erleichtern, oder ein "Rattenfänger", dem die Leute blind hinterherlaufen?

    Für mich ist da ein gewisser Unterschied.

    Are you saying that Bauern are by nature stupid? Maybe con artist, scammer, scam artist? I can't think of anything right now that entails either the farmer or the stupid part.

    Edit: having said that, I should point out that not everyone who favors Trump is stupid. Most Trump supporters are simply angry, not so much dumb. I don't support him, but I love what he does to the GOP. :-)

    no, I'm not saying that farmers are stupid by nature. My grandpa was one... and I know many others who are not... but "Bauernfänger" is something we say... one of many other words that are not pc.

    A lot of people here consider Trump a pompous blowhard, some even say he's dangerous, but if you know anything about the US political system, you know that the president isn't nearly as powerful as some people seem to think.

    There used to be a long running German TV programme (way back when) called "Vorsicht Falle!" who had the byline: Nepper, Schlepper, Bauernfänger.

    "Nepper" being somebody who swindled people (Nepp = rip-off).
    "Schlepper" is today mainly understood as somebody trafficking in humans, in connection with refugees, but I think it was also used as a synonym for conman, scammer.
    For "Bauernfänger" leo writes (in my opionion correctly) confidence trickster.
