    überwendlicher Stich, Schlingstich, Steppstich, Vorstich

    Es geht um Handarbeiten und Nähen mit der Hand... Im Internet finde ich die verschiedensten Begriffe und es ist mir nicht klar, was die Unterschiede sind:
    Vorstich müsste "running stitch" oder "straight stitch" sein?
    Steppstich/Rückstich ist "backstitch".
    Schlingstich und überwendlicher Stich werden allerdings immer wieder gleich bezeichnet bzw. werden beide abwechselnd mit "blanket stitch", "overcast stitch" oder "whipstitch" bezeichnet. Welche Bezeichung ist nun die richtige?

    Damit es im Deutschen keine Unklarheiten gibt: Beim überwendlichen Stich wird an der Kante des Stoffes immer wieder einfach von vorne nach hinten eingestochen und die entstehende Schlaufe durchgezogen. Beim Schlingstich wird der Faden noch einmal durch die entstehende Schlaufe geführt.

    I'd say überwendlicher Stich is overcast stitch and Schlingstich is blanket stitch. Those are British terms. I don't know if American English is the same.

    überwendlicher Stich also: whip-stitch, overlock stitch, overseam stitch and winding stitch

    Schlingstich = festoon stitch or loop stitch

    Steppstich = backstitch, lockstitch or felling stitch

    Vorstich = beats the heck out of me :-)))

    However, I do not understand the difference between overcast and whip stitch now... can you explaine..?

    CosyCat: I hadn't heard of whip stitch before, but I can see the difference from overcast stitch.
    In whip stitch, the fabric is folded over first and therefore there is no bare edge that could fray.
    In overcast stitch, the stitches simply go over the bare edge.
