Not an expression familiar to this American. Where does the source come from?

I'm assuming they're talking about some "third world country" (e.g.) where the women will take any western man because even his social security will go farther there than the income of most local men, so those women are considered to be on those men like "flies on shit" - they're happy with even an old fart just because he has a regular income. I have seen this, unfortunately, time and again.

I'm not sure of your supposition.

When I (briefly) lived in Holland, I was one of the few Americans older people had met who could speak some Dutch. For the generation born around 1925-1930, I was the first American they could ever have a conversation with. That generation of Dutch mostly spoke German as the first foreign language (some of whom learned in it the most appalling conditions). It's sort of a truism in the United States that some people from some foreign countries have a special cachet: Australia, Sweden, Italy, others.

I'm not sure what your story has to do with this. I don't believe anyone would think of Holland as a "third world country." I'm talking about places where especially older westerners go to find young women for very little money. But again, I'm only guessing.

I'm not making the leap from "foreign country" to "third world country." That's all. The appeal of exoticism is not limited to third world countries.

As per, *sigh* context IS your friend. For all we know they could be talking about fishing or trouser openings. Did you hear/read this somewhere? Makes no sense to me.

    "Sexy! Sexy bringt es."

Oder so ähnlich. Soll heißen, man braucht nicht attraktiv oder interessant zu sein, sondern nur sexy. Ob das viel Sinn ergibt, na ja...

@8 Das war auch meine erste Interpretation, aber so richtig in den Text passt sie ja nicht.

@laalaa 'As per, *sigh* context IS your friend. ' Can't we have any discussion here without getting the Islamic State involved? :-O

Well, I suppose you could say any possible meaning seems as far removed from reality as ISIS.

    Sexy fliegt ...
    Sexy Fliegen ...
    Sexy Hosenschlitz [BE] ...
    Sexy Flugbälle [AE] ...
    Sexy geht schon ...

Is your friend random and irreverant? The first thing that comes to mind is insects buzzing around your head. Foreign = hot = flies.

To me, # 2 provides a perfectly plausible interpretation.

Timmyk, why don't you tell us whether or not it fits the context of the chat with your friend?

... or simply ask your friend what he meant? He should know, shouldn't he?

(And then please tell us. I'd really like to know, too.)

Could it possibly have been punctuated something like "Sexy. Sexy flies." (or "Sexy! Sexy flies")?

My thinking behind that is that it's an extension of "so I don't have to be attractive or interesting to be attractive and interesting." Also, to say something "flies" can also mean that it "works" or similar.

In that case, it could mean "Be sexy! Being sexy works!" (i.e., you don't have to be attractive or interesting, just sexy).

hm, It's been decades since I lived in the US, but we called "Hosenschlitz" fly, too...has that changed, or did you mistakeningly mark it as BE? :-)

Sorry for wasting everyone's precious time. I just asked him and his response was:
The other guy, Nes, used a metaphor where girl were flies to honey. So I made a joke that highlighted how flies are the least attractive thing in the world.

Carly, I think it's the plural that's BE. We say 'fly,' they say (apparently) 'flies,' even for one zipper on one pair of pants.
