Hm, im Zusammenhang mit "rolling up his sleeves" fällt mir die Übersetzung schwer.
Ich verstehe "putting on the ritz" (auch) so, dass es meistens Leute sind, die nicht wirklich reich sind, aber sich (für einen Abend?) "herausputzen" und fein ausgehen. Insofern impliziert es eine Vortäuschung falscher Tatsachen, oder? Daher meine (freie) Übersetzung als "tun, als ob".

Wohlgemerkt, spekuliere hier nur!

Ich bin ohne Kontext auf eine andere Deutung gekommen.

Falls im Kontext jemand ist, von dem man normalerweise kennt und erwartet, dass er den Lebensstil "puttin on the Ritz" im Sinne von "sich dem luxuriösen Leben hingeben" pflegt...

Dann könnte der Satz die Aussage machen: Der kann auch anders, der kann auch die Ärmel hochkrempeln und ist dann nicht die Müßiggängerversion, die er normalerweise darstellt.

Die Deutung von Phyco gefällt mir aber auch. Wie üblich muss der Kontext entscheiden. :)

Die Ritz Hotels, die von dem Geschäftsmann César Ritz gegründet worden, sind sehr teuer und luxuriös. Das Wort "ritzy", welches teuer oder elegant heißt, wurde von diesen "Ritz Hotels" abgeleitet. (Ich weiß ja nicht ob dir das hilft oder nicht?!)
Aus dem Kontext würde ich aber auch sagen, dass es etwa "so tun als ob" heißt.

Da fällt mir spontan o.g. Lied ein :-)
phycos "freie" Übersetzung passt demnach prima, würde ich sagen.

Alternativ könnte man es - in Anlehnung an phycos Vorschlag - auch so formulieren:

"Wenn er die Ärmel hochkrempelt, ist das nicht bloß Show ..."

"Sich in Schale werfen" ist sicher in vielen Fällen eine gute Übersetzung, ist aber vielleicht ein bisschen zu neutral. In
"to put on the Ritz" schwingt ja auch die Wertung mit, dass jemand durch sein elegantes Auftreten die Gesellschaft im Luxushotel Ritz nur inszeniert, "aufsetzt" oder eben "markiert". Wenn die regionale Herkunft der Redewendung "den dicken Wilhelm (oder: Willem) markieren" nicht stört, könnte das eine treffendere Übersetzung sein.
