In spoken english the first one might be fine, but grammarwise it's wrong!

If you leave out "unfortunately" you'll have "At the moment, I'm in XX" which is definitely right...

No in ur case you put it in a subordinate clause which is fine, but if you have both place and time in the same part of the sentence you definitely must respect the place before time rule although many (even native speakers) get that wrong.
Its like the combination of if & would which almost everybody uses although according to grammar books it's simply wrong.

I am not a native, but is it really wrong even if the sentence is "Unfortunately, at the moment, I'm in XXX."?

Concerning if and would, there is one exception I think... no.. two... first in business letters where you have to be polite and secondly the eternal truth. :-)

Unfortunately, I have to use "unfortunately".
I think I'll use:

"Unfortunately, I’m in XXX at the moment which is why I write my thesis until April."

or is it better to say

"... which is why I'm writing my thesis until April".

Well with these commas you could argue that now you have some kind of interjection, but I'd still prefer the other solutions :D

@ Badenser: It depends: do you use your time out in XXX to write the thesis; then it's i'm writing (but then the unfortunately is a bit weird)
If you go to xxx and you want to say that your work get's delayed until April, then use I'll write/ I write

Eternal truth is a special form within the if-clauses... e.g.

If it rains, the meadow becomes wet.

Something like that... truths without discussion ;)

Both placements of "at the moment" are correct, but I'm confused about "write my thesis until April"--huh?
I'm trying to translate it back into German...do you mean "I'll have my thesis written by April" or maybe "I can't write my thesis until April" ...?

It's easy:

At the moment, I'm in XXX and I can't go to a job interview in YYY.
Reason: I write / I'm writing my thesis (in XXX) until April.

Oh ok, thanks badenser. You mean that for the next 4 months you are working on your thesis and can't leave to go to an interview in a different location. The 2 verbs (am...write) don't work well together; you need the future tense for "write". That's what is confusing.

I think it would be clearer this way:
Unfortunately, I’m in XXX at the moment and I'll be writing my thesis until April.

I prefer the phrase "working on" for a thesis, though:
Unfortunately, I’m in XXX at the moment and working on my thesis until April.

Edit: "diploma-paper" is wrong. Use thesis.

I also found it confusing (in fact impossible to understand), especially with the addition of 'which is why'.
'Which is why' means 'weswegen', not 'da'.

For the second part of the sentence, could you not say 'as I shall [or will] be working on my thesis until April'.

(Unless you mean: as I have to finish writing my thesis by April.)

Finally, I wrote something similar to strawberry's suggestion:

"Unfortunately, I’m in XXX at the moment writing my thesis until April."

I hope this is working out without "and" as well.

You should have used strawberry's suggestion.
" at the moment writing my thesis until April." still sounds weird in my opinion.

Strawberry's and Hecuba's suggestions are both good.
