    When someone is describing a film or a story, they sometimes want to or need to describe an important detail of the plot. Of course, that may spoil the story for someone who hasn't yet seen the movie or read the book. So it's common for the writer to use the phrase "-- spoiler alert! --" or perhaps "(spoiler alert)" to warn the reader to read no further if the reader wants to avoid reading the upcoming details.

    Is there a similar phrase in German?

    Auch im Deutschen wird meist von einem Spoiler gesprochen, zumindest ist mir schon des Öfteren "Spoilerwarnung" oder "Vorsicht Spoiler" untergekommen.

    Habe ich schon öfter in Foren gesehen, sollte also nicht unüblich sein. Manchmal wird auch nur "Spoiler" geschrieben. Aber das Wort wird meines Wissens nicht übersetzt!

    Für eine Zeitungskritik wäre das allerdings zu lässig, das ist schon Internet-Sprache. In der Zeitung kann das nur umständlicher ausgedrückt werden:
    Und dann nimmt der Film eine Wendung, die alle verblüfft. Wer sich die Überraschung erhalten will, sollte hier aufhören zu lesen.

    In the US, the term "Spoiler alert!" is common even in formal contexts such as a movie review by a film critic.

    Here are some examples from the New York Times: http://query.nytimes.com/search/sitesearch?qu... . Some of these are New York Times blogs, so slightly informal. Others are normal articles or film reviews.
