a hunk is more of a beefcake sort of guy, at least in AE. Hunk implies that he's not only well built but also good-looking. He doesn't have to be a giant, though. If he's got a six-pack, that would qualify him. :-)

I agree with dude - saying "hunk" implies a degree of handsomeness that is not in the German. But "monster of a man" could imply something about the man's behavior that is also not in the original.

I can't think of an equivalent English phrase, "a xxx of a man", so for now, I would go with dude's "built like a brick house". (Although, you may want to be careful there too, since the usual expression is "built like a brick shit-house".)

Maybe "built like a tank".

yes, brick shit-house would be what I wanted to say because it's usually a very voluptuous woman that's said to be built like a brick house. So pardon me for forgetting the "shit" part. :-)
