Echt? Hab ich noch nie gehört. Die Ärzte verabschieden einen auch so, wenn die Geburt kurz bevorsteht.

At least in the US, it seems to me that most people nowadays don't have the superstitious fear of wishing someone well in advance (such as in this case, or with birthday greetings, holiday greetings, etc. -- the exception seems to be saying "break a leg" before a theatrical production, but that's often said with a bit of a laugh). Cultural difference with regard to Germany and a couple other European countries I've lived in. (Of course, I'm sure there are persons/families/social circles/regions in the US that continue this superstitious fear.)
That said, no one would be offended by the suggestions of "the happy event" or "the big occasion," either, and, with regard to a birth, they may be a bit more "refined" in some people's mind.

Zu früh zum Geburtstag gratulieren ist was anderes, als für ein bevorstehendes Ereignis alles Gute oder viel Glück beim Gelingen zu wünschen. Der Wunsch geht ja wohl auch an Mutter bzw. Eltern und nicht an das Kind (nehme ich mal an :-).
