mln ist als Abkürzung im EN auch möglich. Wobei m deutlich häufiger verwendet wird und von daher gebräuchiger ist.

    Good morning,

m für Million ohne Punkt? 41,32m Germans are online?

Und wie sieht dann analog die Abkürzung für Milliarde aus?

    Gruß, Julia

This may be an AE/BE difference. As an American I'm used to seeing it with a capital M or B: JP Morgan Chase borrowed $30B (meaning billion: $30,000,000,000) from the Fed or Microsoft invsted $150M (meaning million: $150,000,000). But in the Financial Times (of London), or the English-language European press, it's common to write b or m: $150m.

It's also common to write out million or billion: $150 million or $30 billion.

And it's also not common to use the abbreviation except for money.

To me, "Germany has about 80M inhabitants" seems awkward. Most common would be to write "about 80 million".

(And to confuse the situation a little more, there is a slight risk of confusion with the older use of M meaning thousand: 150M meaning 150,000.)

    Another AE/BE difference, it seems
British papers tend to use m and bn

I'm writing up a summary of the different ways to abbreviate 'million' in English for a doubter :-) but can't find a quote from a US dictionary showing that the 'M' comes straight after the figure (not attached to the unit that follows: 10M ha. not 10 Mha.). I can't even find an example saying it should be $150M. Can anyone point me to a link or tell me where I might find it in my Chicago Manual of Style?

(Edit: Looks like I'll have to start yet another thread in the hope of getting replies:)
