    Ich schreibe jemanden Unbekannten in LA (rather a VIP) über Empfehlung eines gemeinsamen Freundes an, ob er sich mit mir kommendes Wochenende dort treffen möchte. Ich suche einen höflich-freundlichen Ausdruck, daß ich nicht want to intrude on his weekend, aber die Fühler ausstrecken möchte, ob er an einem Treffen interessiert wäre. Thanks for your help.

    You're on the right track! "Not meaning to intrude on your weekend, it would greatly please me, should you be able to find the time for a meeting ...."

    @ T: That's good, thanks! But isn't there also the direct euqivalent (perhaps not appropriate in this context): to put out one's feelers? Es kommt mir vor, als ob mir das schon untergekommen ist.

    "Put out feelers" or "put out a feeler" is good English (and I might describe a letter to someone I didn't know as "putting out a feeler") but I wouldn't use that phrase in the letter. It carries a connotation of non-comittment--if there is no response to your "feeler", you will probably pursue something else.

    If you want to use the first one in the letter, you could always put it in quotation marks, e.g. I wanted to "put out feelers" to gauge whether you are interested in...

    Hangt davon ab WAS für ein "VIP" er ist. Ruderklub Präsident, dann "Tja, Na und?" U.S Präsident, dann suchen Sie seine Sekretärin aus.
