    Standardsoftware als Losgröße 1

    Subject

    Standardsoftware als Losgröße 1

    [tech.]
    Context/ examples

I'm afraid I don't see the apparent contradiction. In fact I can't make head or tail of the bit in inverted commas. I hope someone can help!

Could you give some more context?

    Here's the whole paragraph:
This is my translation of the rest of it:
‘Web Services’ technology goes one step further. This involves combining different applications and application modules to create new, customer-specific solutions. Thus, the apparent contradiction of ‘standard software als Losgröße 1’ comes within reach. A consortium of leading manufacturers in the ‘UDDI.org’ (Universal Description, Discovery and Integration) is currently developing standards.
I hope this makes the context clearer.

Leo, by the way, gives 5 translations for "Losgroesse". But which is meant here? "Standard software as batch size 1" - does that make sense? To anyone?

Thanks mrkh. It's suddenly a whole lot clearer - your explanation fits perfectly with my context. So perhaps something like "tailor-made products" would be an idiomatic rendering. "Batch size 1" doesn't mean anything to me, but this is not my field, so I'm open to better suggestions.

I work in a company that produces standard products (usually in large batch sizes) and in batch size/lot size 1 if the product is configurable for the customer and therewith customer specific to a certain extent. In this context says that these guys are able to produce software consisting out of only standards in batch size 1 this former contradiction becomes only a "seeming" contradiction. If you want to keep that contratiction within your sentence I would recommend "Standard software as batch size 1" or something similar. If you just want to describe that sort of product - we would call that customer specific... or more often configurable ....

#5: "Batch size 1" doesn't mean anything to me.

Same here. And I'm not convinced by #6.

New systems, software and processes are replacing so-called islands of automation with seamless, automated manufacturing lines that boost overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) from 30 to 80% or more. Like a chess master, these systems think multiple moves ahead on the factory floor to ensure continuing production when circumstances change. These systems cut scrap, improve quality, improve throughput and—the pièce de résistance—open the door to extreme customization, a.k.a. “Order of One” and “Batch Size 1.”
Automated processes include pallet handling, bending and insertion, measuring and assembly transportation. These emerging systems for production-integrated quality assurance (QA) also can disrupt the manufacturing-distribution system by enabling factories to ship these “Orders of One” directly to customers.

Adding my support to "Batch Size 1" and adding "Order of One" as a manufacturing concept for the sake of the archive.
