She bowed her head sideways and looked at him.

Das hört sich sehr falsch an. Jemand eine Idee? Danke im Voraus.

    She tilted her head sideways...

("bowing your head" is always down and towards the front IMU)

"she tilted her head to one side"
    or
"she put her head on one side"

Marianne's suggestions in #3 are the first thing that come to my mind too. I can't explain it, but "to/on one side" just sound better to me than "sideways" (with apologies to wupper and dude).

Actually, I would have said "to the side" had I thought about it, but I just copied and pasted wupper's suggestion and just added my "cocked" to it. So yes, I agree, "sideways" does sound a bit odd. :-)

Uhh, yes, I agree - "to one/the side" sounds better. I just copied the "sideways" from the OP ;-) I was too focused on the "bowing", I think, to notice much else.
