halte ich für eine durchaus passende Beschreibung für 'das Ende der Fahnenstange'. Nur, weil eine Wendung nicht in allen Beispielen passt, bedeutet es nicht, dass sie grundsätzlich nicht passt.

Definitorische Umschreibungen sind nicht immer perfekt und enthalten oft nicht alle Abgrenzungsmerkmale des konkreten Sprachgebrauchs. Alle bisherigen Anwendungsbeispiele sprechen dagegen. Warten wir die ersten englischen Belege ab, wo die Bedeutung passt. #4 gehört nicht dazu (The EU is close to the end of the road with the UK over the Northern Ireland protocol).

FWIW, ich bin anderer Meinung als Rominara und stehe zu meinem Vorschlag aus # 4, der meinem persönlichen Sprachgebrauch und Sprachverständnis entspricht. (Übersetzung im konkreten Beispiel aus # 4: "Für die EU ist bald das Ende der Fahnenstange erreicht.")
