Is "crib" still in use? They still have raves?

not sure. I've never heard 'crib' used in this sense where I live :-)

We say "I've got the place to myself ... " or "the olds have gone away for the weekend, let's party"

there are many more varations :-)

"Crib" was 70s and 80s slang for "place to live"--usually a modest apartment; probably originally Black slang.

"Rave," as far as I know, came into usage in the 90s. I suspect it's dropped out again, but I haven't researched it and don't really know.

Crib is still in use...I'm pretty sure because when my friends have there place to themselve (in New York) they say ''I have a free crib''.

Emik, why don't you learn proper English before you toss around pseudo-slang!

OK, Emik. Thanks for that info.

Bob, you're obviously an old geezer, because otherwise you'd know that "crib" is still used by the MTV generation today. I merely protested Emik's obviously flawed knowledge of colloquial English with which he/she wants to come across as being in the know/hip.

And thanks, but no thanks, I don't do powder (but maybe you do?). :-)

Slanger, people here are interested in helping and in getting help and not being talked down to by smart alecs. Go somewhere else if that's all you can offer.

Right, it's best to be constructive. If Emik is not a native speaker of English, he or she may appreciate a friendly correction.

It's true, I'm an old guy. But you make it sound like an insult.

fine, Phillipp, for you: for one thing, a "free" crib is wrong because it would mean one wouldn't have to pay rent, for instance. It's not used to mean "free of parents." You could say "I've got an empty crib" or "empty digs" this weekend, for instance.

You could have explained that in a friendly way in #7 instead of being ill-tempered and demeaning, I would have thought.

@Bob: sorry, I didn't mean to insult you; I meant "geezer" in a very affectionate way. :-)

Ok, slanger. I'll accept your affection.

I have to disagree with you, however. "I have a free crib" could certainly be understood as "I have a place we can use" in context. I doubt that "I have an empty crib" or "empty digs" would be used much.

Also, note that Emik is quoting friends in New York, who might very well be native speakers of English.

note: "crib" is popular among hip hoppers - "let`s go back to yo crib and chill". Brits who use it are just pandering.
