'Side view' is unnecessary and sounds suspiciously like bad car-dealer jargon. The reason for saying 'rearview mirror' is that a 'rear mirror' would be one mounted on/in the rear of the vehicle, not one mounted in front that gives a view toward the rear. (Which is why I would not recommend using the entry cited from Ernst; even if it's used that way in bad manufacturing jargon, it would sound bizarre to a normal speaker.) But in the case of a side mirror, it is indeed mounted on the side of the car, so what could be simpler?

I slightly disagree with hm-us. ( for the first time) ;-) Side mirror is not wrong, but my driving instructor always told me to use the "side-view mirrors". I don't think he would use "bad car-dealer jargon"..I also hear other people call them side-view mirror.
I'm surprised that you have never heard them being called "side-view mirror".
