Is this a BE/ AE difference? I remember learning about the ones column in school - it sounds right to me.

Considering that I've been living in Germany for 20 years & my A.English has gone to he.., I did google this & did receive lots of replies regarding math books & children's education using "ones column", so obviously, Americans do use it (and have been for 30+ years, considering when I visited school)! But I am always open for criticism!
