The Google found not less than 7,790 results for "sponsored holocaust senator". This above example is a proper applicatation of "thematisieren" in a very particular meaning, "to sponsor" and "Holocaust".

My initial posting is declared "related to politics". Unfortunately, the first reply on my initial posting is not declared as "silly kind of nonsense". Are there some limits in stupidness? Are some, very few people stamped by a huge lack of the ability to adapt a purposed word to an appropriate environment?

There is no translation ... while: tradiction is the freedom of words ... in order to be as close as possible to the genuine intention of the author. Some people will find a phrase using "to sponsor" helpful ... in some cases.

"To sponsor" entspricht *nicht* dem deutschen "thematisieren" (etwas zum Thema machen, diskutieren, erörtern).

To sponsor sth. = etw. befürworten, unterstützen (z.B. einen Antrag, eine Gesetzesvorlage; wird häufig im politischen Bereich verwendet)

"To sponsor the Holocaust" ist eine haarsträubende Übersetzung für "den Holocaust thematisieren". Egal wem dieser Beitrag in Zukunft einmal nützen könnte -- es lesen hier viele mit, die des Englischen noch nicht in dem Maße mächtig sind, als daß sie den Wert deines Beitrages auch richtig einzuschätzen wüßten.

Ich habe nie gesagt: "to sponsor the Holocaust". Aber "the senator sponsored a debate about the Holocaust" geht natürlich -- er thematisierte den Holocaust im Parlament, er brachte die Debatte im Senate als Tagesordnungspunkt ein.

Vielleicht ist die Rücksicht auf English Unkundige ein Argument. Oft aber wird von Deutschen Wort für Wort ins Englische übersetzt, ohne dass der Context hinterfragt wird. Du weißt und ich weiß aber, dass die Löslösung von der Orginalformulierung meistens die einzige Chance ist, den Inhalt in der anderen Sprache angemessen auszudrücken. Deshalb will mein Beispiel die Möglichkeiten des Übersetzens erweitern. Mehr nicht, weniger nicht.

I think it depends on the context, in particular the target group and the writer's attitude (e.g. "ständige Thematisierung . . .", Thematisierung . . . in der Schule", etc.),

Some possibilities:
talking about, focussing attention on, raising public awareness about, making an issue of, bringing up, dwelling on the subject of , highlighting . . .

The word "debate" might be best avoided as it is often used in connection with holocaust denial.

"Etwas thematisieren" ist mehr als nur "zur Sprache bringen" (s. Beispiele von Mike E.: to raise an issue, to bring sth. up, talk about usw.), was ja bedeuten kann, dass die Sache mit einer einmaligen Erwähnung abgetan ist.

Auch "etwas zur Diskussion stellen" (to bring sth. up for discussion, to make sth. a subject of discussion, to dwell on the subject usw.) ist noch zu wenig.

"to raise public awareness" und "to focus attention on" kommt der Sache schon näher, da das Element des Öffentlichen, der politischen Diskussion enthalten ist.

Besonders im politischen Bereich ist "thematisieren" aber unterschwellig immer auch mit der Aufforderung zum Handeln verbunden. Das sieht man auch am Gegenteil: etwas nicht thematisieren ist nicht der Vorwurf, ein Problem unerwähnt zu lassen, sondern es (aktiv) unter den Teppich zu kehren.

Die Forderung nach Klimaschutzmaßnahmen wurde z.B. oft schon von Wissenschaftlern und Umweltschützern erwähnt/diskutiert/zur Sprache gebracht, aber von der Politik bisher nicht "thematisiert", d.h. zum öffentlichen Thema gemacht, als Bereich mit Handlungsbedarf erkannt.

Deswegen erscheint mir "to address the issue of" bzw. die beste Entsprechung zu sein.

Achtung: "to make an issue of .." .." hat eine ganz andere Bedeutung, nämlich etwas Unangenehmes dramatisieren bzw. aufbauschen:

"It's only a small disagreement - let's not make an issue of it"

"I was upset by Joe's remark, but didn't make an issue of it"
