    Es würde an die Quadratur des Kreises grenzen, könnte der Kläger aus der Haft heraus nachweisen, dass er auf freiem Fuße drogenfrei leben kann.

    Dieser Ausdruck für etwas Unmögliches wie "gerade Kurve" geht auch in die Richtung von "Wasch mir den Pelz, aber mach mich nicht nass";

    oder das ganze Füllhorn des einschlägigen Nonplusultra-Gedichts "Dunkel war's, der Mond schien helle (...) drinnen saßen stehend Leute, schweigend ins Gespräch vertieft" etc. etc.

    Ich hab auch im Forum und im Archiv für diesen gängigen Ausdruck keine Übersetzung gefunden.

    Was - wenn es keine 1 : 1 - Übersetzung gibt - wird analog im Englischen verwendet, um das auszudrücken?

    Ich bin mir aber nicht sicher, ob das auch wie im Deutschen im uebertragenen Sinn verwendet wird.

    Der Ausdruck kommt übrigens daher, dass jahrtausendelang versucht wurde, aus einem gegebenen Kreis nur mit einem unmarkierten Lineal und einem Zirkel ein flächengleiches Quadrat zu erzeugen. Seit der Antike zerbrachen sich Mathematiker die Köpfe über dieses Problem.

    Erst 1882 bewies F. Lindemann, dass dies unmöglich ist -- man hatte also jahrtausendelang versucht, das Unmögliche zu erreichen.

    Wie würdet ihr jetzt den ersten Halbsatz "Es würde an die Quadratur des Kreises grenzen, wenn ... " übersetzen?

    "It would almost be like squaring the circle, if ..."
    "It would accord to / adjoin to / be up to / be consistent with the quadrature of the circle, if ..."

    d'accord?

    A square peg in a round hole describes something (or someone) that doesn't fit in. This has nothing to do with the sense of "achieving the impossible"
