Vermutlich ist das Unterscheidungsmerkmal aber kaum der Rede wert, weil nur die "overhead camshafts" immer in der Reklame hervorgehoben werden müssen.

Bottom camshaft war auch meine erste Vermutung, nur, dass der Begriff zusammenhängend doch nicht so viele Treffer hatte. Bottom CAM hatte einige Treffer. Wo sind die Experten??

Most American domestic V8 engines have a central camshaft.

Das gilt nur für V-Motoren, aber dort ist eine untenliegende Nockenwelle eine Central Cam.

Hans - das stimmt, bei V-Motoren liegt die zentrale Nockenwelle "praktisch unten" im Zwickel des V. Sie KANN per definitionem nicht oben liegen.

Da es hier um V-Motoren geht, ist deshalb "central camshaft"

"underhead" geht doch, etwa gleich häufig wie "lower camshaft".

When they got into use, all the other ones were of the type 'untenliegende Nockenwelle' and, as that was the 'normal' case, simply referred to as 'camshaft'

Daddy: the preceding text referred to overhead camshafts and the one in question to camshafts "on the bottom" and, specifically, to V-engines. Therefore, I think "center camshaft" would be the most appropriate in this case. I thank you guys for your support!
