    Suggestionseitenspiegel = side-view mirror [autom.][Amer.]

    "A wing mirror is a mirror found on motor vehicles for the purposes of helping the driver see areas behind the vehicle. A wing mirror is mounted (usually) on a wing or part analagous thereto, unlike a rear-view mirror. Sometimes a wing mirror is called a side-view mirror, although the purpose of the mirror is to help the driver see to the vehicles rear, not its sides."

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Side-view_mirrors

    Usage examples:
    www.chevrolet.com ["side-view mirror"]
    www.chrysler.com ["side view mirror"]

    But Ford [www.ford.com] shows "outside mirror", instead, and Land Rover's Range Rover website for the US [www.landroverusa.com] uses "exterior mirror", and the Range Rover site for the UK [www.landrover.co.uk] shows "side mirror".

    Here, I and my family and friends say "side view mirror".We might even write it "sideview mirror", but we usually write it "side-view mirror".

    I think it's logical to say "side mirror", but that's not the custom where I live, at least among the people I know.

    I grew up in the southeastern United States, in Atlanta, Georgia. I was born in the mid-1960s. I'm writing this on Friday, March 9, 2007.

    In the UK it's called wing mirror. You differentiate between off-side (OS) and near-side (NS) wing mirrors.
