'sufficient' sounds very funny, imo. I would make that 'adequate', or preferably 'pass', 'bare pass' and 'fail' for the bottom three. We used those in my schools when I was still teaching.

Hi, John! - And what figure/rating would you put on 'bypass' ? . . .

(Beware! - This is a test and your sense-of-humo(u)r will be rated upon the answer given by you!) . . . ;-)))

I have never heard of a 4-befriedigned being a failure. Most of the time a single 5-mangelhaft is not a failure.

"satisfactory" is the literal translation for "befriedigend" (3). Hence, would'nt it be bnetter to use something else for "ausreichend" (4), maybe the literal "sufficient"?

    Simon A

    ob wörtliche Übersetzung oder nicht:

    im deutschen System ist befriedigend weitaus besser als satisfactory;

'Tolerable' doesn't sound remotely like English in this context, sorry.

'Very poor' is not used for grades either.

You really have to use terms that are actually common in the field, not those that someone has just made up because they sound a little similar to the German ones.

"wahrscheinlich aus Unkenntnis" - or possibly because some of us have a life.

Unkenntnis? I was a teacher for many years. Mags' are OK apart from 'Unsatisfactory' and 'Very poor', which no English school would use.

    The common terms are:

    Excellent
    Very good
    Good
    Fair
    Pass
    Bare pass
    Fail

There are 7 here, so you need to reconcile the 2 systems as best you can.
