Well, you are the native speaker. Does the picture behind the (UK) link I provided meet your beauty mirror, or my toilette mirror, or which name have you got for it? Anyway, the picture shows a Schminkspielgel.

    Thanks for the answers.
Werner, where on earth do you find these things??
Though I have to say make up mirror sounds better, but there it is, so it must be right....

JackieGB, this was a spur of my overbounding imagination, where I thought that "toilet mirror", something my mind made me look for, might be a suitable translation, verfied it by Google, and BINGO.

The British English expression for that poncey French "toilette mirror" is dressing table mirror.

And it's an easy winner over "toilette mirror" on the Google Stakes.

    und wie ist es mit:

    vanity table mirror

    und

    dresser mirror?

und da muss es doch auch so einen ausdruck für das handtaschending geben: powder compartment? ganz weit weg in meinem hinterkopf, könnte mich da sehr irren.

To me, the main difference is that a makeup mirror is usually designed for seeing very clearly. So it could be either a medium-size mirror that you set on your bathroom counter, or the larger mirror on the wall behind your bathroom counter (or in an actor's dressing room), but in each case it would probably have bright lights built in. These days there are also a lot of magnifying mirrors, some lighted, some not.

A dressing-table mirror, in contrast, doesn't have to have any special features. I would assume it's probably either just the mirror that's part of the back of the dressing table (aka vanity, though I don't think I'd say a vanity mirror), or a mirror on a little stand on the dressing table.

A dresser isn't quite the same as a dressing table, because it doesn't have a place for a chair where you can sit at it. Many dressers have mirrors, but they're not that well suited for putting on makeup because you have to stand farther away.

I've never heard of a toilette/toilet mirror, but it would probably mean a dressing-table mirror.

PS: The Handtaschending could be a powder compact, but nowadays women may just carry a small purse mirror instead of a compact.

I think this is the mirror that is attached to the wall and moveable, with an magnifying mirror on one side and a regular mirror on the other. Thi sis not a vanity (a desk with a mirror).

I would definitely call that a makeup mirror. Some hotels have them nowadays.
