    Grund hierfür sind die soziologischen Eckdaten in Frankreich. Dort leben über 40 Prozent der Bevölkerung auf rund einem Prozent der Landesfläche, im Gegensatz zu Deutschland, wo knapp 40 Prozent der Bevölerung auf 5 Prozent der Landesfläche verteilt sind.

    ... lives on xy per cent of the country's land area / total land area / total land surface.

    The word "territory" has political connotations that don't apply here.

    elli, I would say liveS. We are talking about 40% of the POPULATION, which is singular, at least in AE.

    40% (of the population) lives on 1% of the land.
