    I used to study Nordistik over in Germany and every time I said "in Island", I'd get corrected. Now I'm proofreading a translation and the translator is insisting that it's "in Island". I'd tend to believe her, if it weren't for the 50 or so times I've been beaten over the head with "auf Island".

    Is there a native speaker who can clarify?

    Ich würde sagen, wenn die Insel auch ein eigener Staat ist, heißt es "in", und wenn sie nur Teil eines anderen Staates ist, "auf".
    Also:
    in Island
    auf Korsika

    Ich glaube, es hängt davon ab, ob Du den Staat oder die Insel meinst.

    In Island (bezogen auf den Staat)
    Auf Island (bezogen auf die Insel)

    I think it depends a bit:

    - in Island: within the political borders of .. e.g. in Island fährt man seit 1968 auf der rechten Strassenseite

    - auf Island: in the geographical location that is Iceland .. e.g. auf Island geht die Sonne im Mai um 4:30 auf

    How do others think/feel about this?

    In Deinem Text steht Island ja in einer Aufzählung von Staaten, nicht Inseln. Es wäre daher logisch, "Island" als Land aufzufassen und nicht als geographische Einheit. Daher "in Island".

    Wäre die Aufzählung "auf Gran Canaria, der Isle of Man oder Island", wäre es wohl anders. Dennoch würde ich Island immer zuerst als Staat ansehen.

    Das hatten wir doch vor kurzem, nur mit Kuba, nicht mit Island, wenn ich mich recht erinnere. Fazit (wie hier auch schon gesagt): "In Island", wenn der Staat gemeint ist, "auf Island", wenn die Insel gemeint ist.
