You decide whether to use "§" or "Sec." "Offense" seems broadest here.

That's what we call it here (Google finds DOJ, Supreme Court, but also EU references to it that way). "Criminal Code" is apparently common usage elsewhere, and that's what the BMJ itself uses, here: http://www.bmj.bund.de/enid/7394c0111e07265a1... in its publication "Criminal Justice in Germany."

Watch here: http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/Teilliste_t... for new official English translations of major German legislation. They're still working on the BGB but I imagine the other codes are in the pipeline too.

"Vergehen" ist keine Straftat (offence), sondern ledliglich eine gegen ein Gesetz oder eine Norm verstoßende Handlung.

@ No. 4 - Yes, it is. Supported by Romain, 4th ed., which also gives "misdemeanor" (but in most cases it seems unadvisable to try squeezing the German system's categories into our felonies and misdemeanors). Here's Creifelds (19. Aufl.): Vergehen i.S. des StGB (§ 12 II) ist eine rechtswidrige Tat, die mit Freiheitsstrafe im Mindestmaß von weniger als 1 Jahr oder mit Geldstrafe bedroht ist. And here's Black's (8th ed.): offense: 1. A violation of the law; a crime, often a minor one. See "crime". Also termed criminal offense (...).

Re. #5: True, that in most cases it is unadvisable to try squeezing the German system's categories into another legal system, but does anyone know whether toolate is looking for AE, BE, or an internationally applicable solution?
