Offenbar handelt es sich dabei um ein Zitat von Henry Ford, das englische Original habe ich bislang nicht finden können.
    Kann mir zufällig jemand weiterhelfen??

The publicity turned Ford into a national celebrity overnight. After 1914 his company would spend almost nothing on advertising; it got all the free press it needed.

Legendary American businessman, Henry Ford, once said:
"If I had $5 to start a shoelace business, I'd spend $2 buying shoelace stock and $3 on advertising!"

    ...I tried in vain too.

I suspect that an advertising gimmick is to ascribe false quotes to Henry Ford.

I could be wrong, but I seem to remember "Advertise or die!" by the ad guru David Ogilvy (Ogilvy & Mather, NY).
    No time for research, sorry.

In the words of the great E.C Cochran. "Early to bed, early to rise, no jolly good if you don't advertise".

another 2 cents ... and a vague feeling:
Isn't there anything suitable in Dorothy L Sayers' "Murder Must Advertise"? I daresay Lord Peter Wimsey should have something to add to this topic.
