    I'd like to know if there is an english equivalent to this German proverb.

    Literally it means that somebody who's eavesdropping might hear people talking about his own disgrace or shame...

    Allegorical it means that it's better not to "drop any eaves" because the things that people do not dare to say into your face are never good things anyway...

    In AE, a lot of times you could say "a fly on the wall." As in: when John got reamed by the boss..., I would love to have been a fly on the wall in his office.

    Sorry, daß ich diesen alten thread ausgrabe.  Aber ich suche wirklich händeringend eine Entsprechung zum Lauscher an der Wand, der die eigene Schand' hört.

    Damit stieß ich auf "fly on the wall", was hier von dude und a angegeben wird.  Das trifft es aber nicht.  Wenn jemand besagte fly on the wall sein will, dann käme im Deutschen eher "da möchte ich Mäuschen spielen" infrage.  Denn man hört ja, wie der andere eins abkriegt, nicht aber man selbst?

    Hat noch jemand andere Vorschläge für den Lauscher?  Danke!

    Mein PONS (80er Jahre) schreibt zu diesem Sprichwort nur:

    "People who listen at doors never hear anything good about themselves."

    Auch diese Erklärung stimmt mich nicht zufrieden.
    Es müsste schon was mit 'eavesdropping' sein - und dann sich vielleicht reimen.

    Danke in die Runde!  Mir ware nun - wie von Braunbärin angemerkt - eine etwas "griffigere" und/oder gereimte Übersetzung lieb gewesen, aber dann muß ich wohl oder übel beim idiom bleiben.  Man hat's nicht leicht ;-)
