    conspicuous austerity
(kawn.SPIK.yoo.us AWS.tair.uh.tee) n. 1. Spending large quantities of money on goods and services that convey an image of simplicity or austerity. 2. A lifestyle in which a person openly and deliberately uses goods and services that convey a lower socioeconomic status.

I am familiar with Thorstein Veblen's 1899 "conspicuous consumption" [lavish or wasteful spending intended to enhance social prestige]. LEO defines "austerity" u.a. as "selbstauferlegte Sparsamkeit" and "Entbehrung." I am looking for a German equivalent of "conspicuous" that can precede Entbehrung. Obviously, "aufwendig" before "Entbehrung"would be a "contradictio in adjecto." TIA

I think, "conspicuous" in this case would be best translated as "demonstrativ".

"betont" (emphasized) would also work fine: "betonte Entbehrung"

    How about: betonte/demonstrative "Kargheit"?

    merkliche Knappheit
