Because secondary school can mean many things, I would explain a bit and probably call it "10th grade secondary school graduation"

Immer wieder schwer zu übersetzen. Ich lehre an einer Uni in Westkanada, und glaubt mir, der Durchschnittsstudent hier liegt geistig und wissensmmäßig kaum über dem eines deutschen Realschülers. Deshalb wehre ich mich ein bisschen gegen das O Level oder sonstige gängige Pauschalübersetzungen, da schlichtweg irreführend und nicht der Realität entsprechend.

Ich würde eher sagen, der deutsche Realschulabschluss entspricht in etwa dem nordamerikanischen 1. oder oft gar 2. College-Jahr.

In keeping with Fred's view that the document equates to the
education level after completing the 2nd year of college, then in AE that might be an "Associate Degree" which is awared in the USA by two year community colleges.

I agree with Fred that it is "schwer zu übersetzen". Although there's no exact equivalent, a good rough U.S. equivalent would be a high school diploma. Both the Mittlere Reife and the high school diploma are secondary degrees.

One difference is that the Mittlere Reife would be obtained after ten years of schooling (at about age 16), whereas the typical high school graduate is 18. Another difference is that the Mittlere Reife does not qualify someone to study at a university, whereas a high school diploma is generally seen as a prerequisite, though not a guarantee of qualification, for study at an American college or university.

In any case, despite Fred's high opinion of the intellectual and educational superiority of the German Reaslschüler, the Mittlere Reife is not equivalent to an associate's degree. The former is a secondary degree, the latter post-secondary.
