    Johannes, die Prozentzahl kann man hier nicht einfach übernehmen:

    Ein Auto hat z.Zt eine 'Mileage' (Meilenleistung) von 20 Miles per gallon

    Jetzt, mit der Erfindung, wird der Spritverbrauch um 75% auf 1/4 Gallone gesenkt

    Das Auto hat jetzt eine Mileage von 80 Miles per gallon

    Die Mileage wurde um 300% erhöht . . .

    Mileage is not the same as gas consumption. The German sentence says he is going to improve the gas consumption by 75%. So if you need 20 gallons to go X miles, now you will only need 5 gallons to go the same distance.

    Therefore:

    The inventor claims that he could reduce gas consumption by 75%. His claims are very optimistic/over the top/incredible.

    'Kraftstoffverbrauch' = 'gas consumption' = gas volume per defined stretch . . .

    'Meilenleistung' = Mileage' = stretch per defined gas volume . . .

    What I meant was that a 75% reduction in gas consumption is not the same as a 75% improvement in gas MILEAGE. They're two different numbers, so you can't mix them up.

    If I improve the gas consumption so that I only need 0.25 liters to go 100 km instead of 1 liter to go 100 km, that's a 75% improvement in gas consumption. But on that same liter, I can now go 400 km instead of 100 km. That's an improvement of 300%.
