    Billionen

    Context/ examples
Im deutschen Text wird der Begriff "Billionen" benutzt.

If I am not mistaken, then the German "billion" means a million millions. Which is what "billion" used to mean in England. Now trillion seems to be more prevalent, with billion being used for "Milliarde".

Given that there seem to be different usages of "billion", can I be sure that trillion will always be understood as meaning the German "Billion"?

(and is there a German "Trillion"- if so, what would be the translation for that?)

    Thanks,

    Deutsch: eine Million (1 000 000) = Englisch: one million (1 000 000)
    Deutsch: eine Milliarde (1 000 000 000) = Englisch: one billion (1 000 000 000)
    Deutsch: eine Trillion (1 000 000 000 000) = Englisch: one trillion (BE)/one quintillion (AE) (1 000 000 000 000)

Ich hoffe, ich habe keine Nullen vergessen...

dt. Billion = 10 hoch 12 = 1000 Milliarden 'oder' eine Million Millionen
    dt. Billiarde = 10 hoch 15 = 1000 Billionen
dt. Trillion = eine Million Billionen
    dt. Trilliarde = 1000 Trilliarde
dt. Zillion = ugs: eine unvorstellbar große Zahl
(Also für mich z.B. 245678 Euro).

Bei Onkel Dagopert erinnere ich mich noch an Pimpillionen und Tripstrillionen. Das war vor vielen Jahren. Jetzt hat er sicher mehr.

Hans, die Maßeinheiten des Duck'schen Vermögens waren leider nicht einheitlich. Ich glaube, auf www.donald.org gibt es eine Übersicht ...

Und die "brazillions" darf man auch nicht vergessen:

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing.

He concludes by saying, "And yesterday, three Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" Mr. Bush exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this sudden outward display of emotion, nervously watching as the president sits, head in hands, almost sobbing.

Finally, the president looks up and asks, "Just how many is a brazillion, anyway?"

RiKo: Just to confuse matters a bit -- I don't believe 'quintillion' is in the right place in your list. US usage would be:
tens, hundreds, thousands, millions, billions, trillions, quadrillions, quintillions, etc.
I think the only major difference is that 'Milliarde' in German (or other forms of the word in other languages) often gets used in other countries in place of the US 'billion' -- and everything then gets adjusted one to the right.
    Right?

If it's like that in US: "tens, hundreds, thousands, millions, billions, trillions, quadrillions, quintillions, etc."
then it isn't only adjusted one to the right with the german, because it's not only 'milliarde' which comes in between.

    it's like that:
zehn, hundert, tausend, million, milliarde, billion, billiarde, trillion, trilliarde, quadrillion, quadrilliarde, quintillion, quintilliarde, etc.
