Eve, I don't believe the term was invented in Germany. Other countries have been offering degree courses in mechatronics for years - see URL.

Thank you, that translation really helps a lot.
I did not mean that the term was invented in Germanny, but rather that it has not been used in Germany for very long, therefore it is a new term for Germany. But I see that my wording can be misunderstood.

Ich habe die Diskussion (auch mit den weiteren Verlinkungen) gelesen.
Wie weit diese Diskussion hilfreich ist, muß jeder für sich entscheiden. Für meinen Teil hätte es dahingehend geholfen, in Richtung mechatronic weiterzusuchen.

I do not know how anybody could misunderstand your perfectly clear comment. I just read it again. No mention of the term being invented in Germany, indeed.

@hein: No criticism intended. I genuinely thought Eve's "es gibt wohl noch keine gaengige _Uebersetzung_" implied that a Mechatroniker was a German phenomenon. I'll stop reading between the lines if you will.
