Yes, that's precisely my problem. I'm spoilt for choice and don't have the expertise to know which is the right translation in a software context.

Amrita, sorry, I see your problem. Does the context suggest the connection to be a hardware operation (i.e. plug in) or a software based operation?

From the context I presume it's a software connection.

Hmmm, 'Steckverbindung' is not a commonly used word for connections (links) in software user interfaces, but I suppose a programmer could have chosen it to illustrate the operation selected by the software user.

If you like, eMail the text to me and I'll see whether I can decide for you.

HänsG: Thanks for your kind offer but I don't wish to take up your time - I'm tending towards "socket" and will keep googling!
Thanks everyone for all your trouble.

    Good choice! Should fit eitherway.

    Suggestionplug in [comp.]

Plug in wird in der Software benutzt, z.B. um Erweiterungen im Web Browser einzubringen. Für mich sieht das nach einer sehr missglückten Eindeutschung aus. Google bringt für plug in auch sofort einige Software Links.

This really seems to be a FUBAR translation from English to German. "Steckverbindung" doesn't make any sense for Software. Depending on the technical background, "socket" might indeed have been the original. Maybe "port"? Maybe...

This sounds to me like a translation of "connector".

This is more likely if the context mentions things like Java, J2EE, CICS, . . .

We really need a lot more context.
