I tend to think it has both the metaphorical and literal connotation.

In einer solchen Situation kenne ich eher: Esst ein Stückchen für mich mit!

When I was in England and stayed with a host family, I once sent a text to my host father that I won't come home for havin' dinner... later he wrote back: ok, I'll save you some.

So I'd translate it like Ich heb dir was auf / Ich tu dir was auf die Seite.
And in your case Ich tu dir ein Stück Kuchen auf die Seite / Ich heb dir ein Stück Kuchen auf.
