I definitely want to remedy/correct/rectify this deficiency

I'd say; I wouldn't say what you have

Agree with #1, although to compensate for a deficiency is different than remedying, correcting, or rectifying a deficiency IMO. (As I see it, to compensate means to do something different so that the deficiency, while still there, is no longer of importance, which the latter verbs would have the effect of removing the deficiency.)

However, if "compensate" were to be used, I'd say (AE) that you would need to say "to compensate for a deficiency." Do other AE speakers see it this way as well? What about BE speakers?

I agree with hbberlin, but "compensate" is also used without "for." M-W, for instance, has it as meaning "to be equivalent to" and give as example, "Her virtues compensate her faults." I personally can't claim to have seen it used without "for" before in this type of context (there's always what a "compensator sprocket" does, e.g.), but even then it doesn't seem to fit the OP's context which, I assume, is the same thing as "wettmachen" in this case.

Für mich stimmt irgendwas am deutschen Original nicht.... Hat was mit dem Wort 'Mangel' zu tun.
