    There is no plural for "fish" unless of course you travel in Mob circles. "The Sopranos are sleeping with the fishes now." :-)

    Solche Konstruktionen gibt es im Deutschen nicht. Ich kenne das als "constructio ad sensum". Es wird nach dem Sinn übersetzt, nicht nach der grammatischen Form. Da es viele Fische sind, schreibt man "are". So gibts das auch bei police, family usw.
    "My family are all fine." z.B.

    But there are a few exceptions. I heard American ichthyologists say fishes, e.g. when talking about different species of fish.

    You are right, Holger. "People", which mostly can't be "peoples", but in some cases it can be, namely if it means the same like "Volk", has the same status.
