What's all this "it would wonderful"? That's wrong, you need "would be". Come on guys, look up your conditionals.

Thanks, Gibson, I was starting to doubt my feeling for the English language.

Ì know what you mean - if you read it wrong often enough, you doubt everything. But I'm quite sure about this one ;-)

    It would (be) wonderful.

Understandable and current both with and without the "be" in AE.

possibly - I don't know much about AE. But even so, it's utterly and totally wrong and maybe shouldn't be suggested in a forum like LEO.

at the very least not without some kind of explanation.

Support for Gibson again. My English is Americanized and strongly calls for the "be". Why are there no AE-native speakers tonight? hm? dude (well, sort of native speaker, but Oberlehrer)?

gg, are you now completely off your rocker? It would (be) wonderful. Understandable and current both with and without the "be" in AE.

"It would wonderful" makes as little sense in AE as it does in BE.

personally, I would consider the connection of "swimming" and "mainstream" to be pretty corny. However, given a clever set of circumstances or a good tongue-in-cheek sentence construction, it might juts work. I'd be careful, though. You might hear a lot of groaning. :-)

@ maxxxpf This is hardly "swimming in the mainstream"...

@ dude - nah, eloquent as people find me my bullsit-o-meter only goes so far and then it's BIIIAAAA-TTCCCCHHHHHHH- SLAAAAAAAP!

To commend oneself on the appropriate use of the verb to be??? As a teacher? Seriously? As an educator? I mean, really, seriously?

@ gg It was not meant as intentional abuse - but seriously It would wonderful.? In what parallel universe is this ok? I thought it was, must have been, God willing, an April's Fool left over...

Okay, here goes: "It would wonderful." is not a correctly formed English sentence by any standards. I admit it - must have had a bit of a black-out there somewhere along the way and then dug myself into a hole. Sorry.

Atta girl! (If you are indeed a girl [sorry gg might have thrown me off]- if not - Atta boy!) I'm always available to lend a hand for a hoist out of a hole... forgive me but someone hereabouts seems to be trying to channel Oscar Wilde and it's getting right up my nose!
It would be wonderful if I could help in any way at all
