In a business letter, when referring to the "mich" who wrote the letter, you can also use:
Please contact Mr. X or the undersigned.

Standard English is "Please contact Mr. X or me."

However, this formulation seems, somehow, to be too abrubt, or too egoistical. For reasons hard to explain, it just doesn't have the right tone. Consequently, to avoid that crass-sounding use of "me", many people will substitiute "myself" for "me". Even though it is formally incorrect according to some grammar books, it seems politer. (I support Sarah.)

I've never thought of "myself" as being incorrect, and use it, rather than "me." To tell the truth, it would never have crossed my mind to use me :-)

Carly, I agree with you, "myself" is fine, but Fowler (for one) would disagree. He says (paraphrasing a bit), that unless jocular intent is unmistakeable, the use of "myself" for "I" or "me" when in association with someone else is best avoided. The word is best confined to its uses as a reflexive or for emphasis. But (as said), I agree with you and not Fowler in this case.

*Cringe* I have to agree with Fowler instead of Martin and say that I find "myself" unequivocally wrong. When I first saw Sarah's post, I thought maybe it was ok in BE, and that was were people picked up this habit (but see askoxford page below stating otherwise). I think that we should be encouraging people learning English to learn it correctly, even if they will run into the other usage from native speakers.

(search for myself on all these web pages)

(says that using myself sounds pompous)

Maybe it's just because I left GB before this became normal, but "myself" looks absolutely wrong to me. Saying "Contact myself" sounds just as nonsensical as saying "I kissed himself" to my ears. I'd write something like "Feel free to get in touch with me whenever you need any help" to make it sound more friendly. When I'm sent emails with "Please contact myself or Mr X" it really grates on me and I've always seen it as a sign the writer isn't very well educated - but if so many people now find it normal, I guess I'm just behind the times!

Just adding my vote for "me". "myself" makes me wince as well. I agree with mre that we should encourage people learning English to learn it correctly.

Argh, I've always written 'myself' as I thought it sounded better but promise never to do so again.

May I say in my defence, that I can only remember having one English grammar lesson (I first learnt English grammar in Latin, French and German lessons) and that was about use of the apostrophe!

'Myself' can only be use with 'I': "I did something myself".
"Contact myself" sounds like doing something when you're alone in bed at night, sorry.
