    Hello Leos,
    I'm looking for an American English expression to show the difference between "Transporter" and "Lastwagen".

    I am quite certain of the Sattelauflieger being a semi truck, but I can't use "lorry" for Lastwagen (my American colleagues wouldn't understand it!). Is there a more specific word than just "truck"?

    I think I have heard "tractor trailer" in America before--can any Ami-Leos confirm this?

    Vielen Dank :-)

    articulated vehicle

    tractor/trailer

    Context/ examples
    I'm a Brit and the whole construction is an articulated vehicle.
    However, I've lived many years with Americans (God bless them) and the
    separate parts are tractor and trailer.
    But I await criticism.

    Before things get too confusing, these are the AE terms as I understand them:

    Lastwagen=truck (a general term on both sides of the equation)
    Transporter=van
    Sattelauflieger=semitrailer
    Sattelauflieger+Sattelschlepper=tractor-trailer

    I had a couple of long threads on this very topic already written for New Entry and Wrong Entry, and I tried to send them yesterday but something about them didn't work, so I'm not going to try again until the LEO team has had a chance to look at the problem. I'd rather not post long threads that may just turn out to be duplicates. Particularly if people are going to complain that I write too much anyway.
