    I always thought that "werden" would be translated with "become" and I thought that "I want to become a teacher" was correct.
    Now a lecturer at my university told us that "become a teacher" is absolutely incorrect for him and we should use "be" instead.
    What do native speakers think about this?

    Whether become is incorrect or not I cannot say (I rather think not), but we do use be in this context. "What do you want to be when you grow up?" is the typical question. "become a teacher" sounds weird to me as well.

    I think the lecturer's question is meant to be understood as what one ultimately wants to be. The "becoming" part is only a process, while the "being" is the final result. One doesn't usually ask what process the other person would lke to undergo, but rather what final results he/she wants to achieve/have achieved.
