Welche Preposition ist denn richtig? Und kann man hier "could" sagen, oder braucht es eine substitute form?

    none:

He could not (fall a)sleep the first night.

The first night, he could not (fall a)sleep.

"He couldn't (wasn't able to) sleep in the first night".

"During the first night he couldn't sleep" (meaning during the whole long duration of the night, with all tossing and turning, he was kept awake).

I would use the first version.

    You don't need/want a preposition.

He couldn't sleep the first night.
