    wohl beides richtig, aber wo liegt der (feine) Unterschied.

    are correct. There is no difference in meaning at all.

    he admitted stealing the car
    or
    he admitted having stolen the car
    are not correct

    Oh, sorry - just discovered that some people do say it without the "to", in which case they are all correct and mean the same thing :-) - can't change my incorrect post for some reason, so it will have to stay there confusing people for eternity.
